Permits and escort of oversized and heavy vehicles

Permits are a significant part of the costs of transporting oversized cargoes. We offer the obtaining of special permits for the movement of heavy and oversized vehicles mainly in Bulgaria, but also in other countries such as Romania, Serbia, Greece, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Austria, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and other countries in Europe.

We have our own escort cars for Bulgaria, meeting all legal requirements and experienced specialists, ready to escort your vehicle, no matter how long, wide or high it is. If necessary, we can organize a police escort, as well as other accompanying activities such as: route survey, suspension and lifting of power transmission network, suspension of catenary network at railway crossings, removal of road signs and facilities, etc.

Useful information:

In Bulgaria, permits for the movement of oversized and/or heavy vehicles are issued by the Road Infrastructure Agency and are valid for specific (individual) transport with specified vehicle/trailer registration numbers, overall dimensions/weight and a precisely defined route. Permits are valid for up to 30 days from the date of issue.

When is an oversized transport permit required?

When at least one of the total dimensions exceeds:

• For truck with trailer L x W x H/ T – 18.75 x 2.55 x 4.00 m/ 40.00 tons
• For truck with trailer L x W x H/ T – 18.75 x 2.55 x 4.00 m/ 40.00 tons

Payment of road fee only - it can be paid at the entrance border of Bulgaria to another border or to a settlement in Bulgaria

Up to total dimensions L x W x H/ T – 22.00 x 3.30 x 4.30 m/ 45.00 tons no escort required.

When vehicles exceed even one of the above dimensions/weight, a special permit issued by the Road Infrastructure Agency is required. Permits can be issued for a minimum of 2, 4 or 6 working days, with, of course, the lowest fees payable for 6 days. For express orders, the fees to the Road Infrastructure Agency for application and document processing are higher.

An escort is mandatory when one of the dimensions exceeds L x W x H/T - 24.00 x 3.50 x 4.70 m/ 60 tons, but the competent authorities may require vehicles with smaller dimensions to be accompanied when it is considered that they pose a danger to the road and road facilities or may endanger the safety of other road users.

The movement of oversized vehicles is prohibited in the following cases:

• when visibility is reduced below 50 m due to fog, heavy rain and snowfall;
• in case of ice on the roads;
• during the dark part of the day and during the hours of maximum traffic intensity

Permissible speed for oversize vehicles:

• 70 km/h - on highways;
• 50 km/h – on national roads;
• 40 km/h - in the cities;
• 40 km/h - when they are being escorted
